                                            On the cover
The front cover image Derelict doorways by Jean Bradshaw was one of the high scoring
                                            images at our January Competition.
“In the calm between the first and second Covid peaks last year, we took a break and
travelled to the Eastern Cape over many mountain passes, one of them being in the
Baviaanskloof. A truly pristine area. We spent two nights at Zandvlakte farm in the Ba-
viaanskloof, where I noticed an interesting looking abandoned building in the early
morning light. The building had no roof, so taking it at that time was not ideal as the
contrast between light and shadows was too extreme; and I went back in the late after-
noon with an art approach in mind.
“This image is a multiple of four images taken in camera – one out of focus and three
in focus. Because the camera was handheld, they are not all identical, which was my
aim while taking the image. All four received the same treatment in Camera Raw in
regard to exposure, contrast and colour, before merging them in Photoshop and bring-
ing back some of the details outside the door. The final step was to superimpose one
of my separately texture images over it - again using the blending mode to control the
intensity of it and its overall effect,” Jean Bradshaw explained.
