July/August 2021 Cape Camera
Winning images from August
Set subject: Cell phone photography
The judges for the competition were Jane Bursey from Creative CC, Karyn Parisi from Fish
Hoek FS (and CTPS) and Elizma Fourie from Hermanus PS. It was decided to use a panel of
judges in light of the large number of entries this month (80 in the Open and 49 in the Set
subject) and to give judges with less experience the opportunity to judge alongside others.
The images were discussed and scored in a Zoom session the morning before the competi-
tion (in the presence of Lesley Parolis and Nicol du Toit). The three judges first scored all the
images and then each of them commented on three images in rotation. The scores were
averaged and presented as one score on the competition evening, reports LESLEY PAROLIS.
Promotions
Walter Berndorfler was promoted to Advanced and Theo Potgieter to Salon.
PSSA monthly competition
The CTPS entries were Squacco Feast by Dave Gordon (Senior Entry) and Country Lane by
Joyce Goldschmidt (Junior Entry).
Below are the winners in the various categories together with the judge’s comments.
Set Subject
Joint Winner PDI - Set (Master) Dancing water by Kim Stevens
(25). A very simple composition, with lovely soft pastel colours.
The slow shutter speed adds to the mood in this photo. The
breaking wave is nicely placed on the top third. The faint verti-
cal lines caused by camera movement add to the photo by giv-
ing it soft gentle textures. (Elizma Fourie)
Winner PDI – Set (Beginner) Country lane by Joyce Gold-
schmidt (25). A lovely scene with a beautiful autumn-toned
colour palette. The author has made good use of the road-
way and the avenue of trees to create a strong leading line
that encourages the viewer to explore the scene and follow
the road to the gate at the end. It appears that the author
has used a filter to add texture, but unfortunately this is
a bit intrusive in the foreground and detracts somewhat
from the scene, as does the blurring in the corners. Overall,
though, it's well seen and very well captured! (Jane Bursey)
