On the cover
Our front cover image Malachite Sunbird on Pincushion by Lesley Parolis was one of the
September competition images which has a special meaning not only to Lesley but to
many of us and serves as a true reflection of our time. “In August last year I tested positive
for Covid-19 but was very fortunate to experience only mild symptoms. It was however
necessary to self-isolate in my bedroom for the 10 days after the first symptoms appeared.
We are lucky that our bedroom opens up onto the garden and, with the large pin cushion
protea bushes in full bloom, I was treated to a display of beauty every time I looked out.
To alleviate the boredom, I decided to do some photography. I set up a bird feeder to at-
tract the sunbirds and placed my camera and 500 mm lens on a tripod in the large window
and waited. There were so many birds visiting the feeder and the pincushion flowers that
I had a grand time observing their behaviour and pressing the shutter button in burst
mode trying to get the perfect shot. I’m not sure that I did but I had a lot of fun and cap-
tured images of all the different types of sunbirds and other species that visited. This shot
of the malachite sunbird was one of my favourites. I recovered quickly and life returned
to “Lock down normal”. Sadly, the number of birds visiting the garden declined once lock-
down ended and the traffic returned to our suburbs”, explained Lesley.
