On the cover
Our front cover image Doors and Doorways was taken by Lesley Parolis. This
image was entered into the set subject for July, which was Visual Rhythms.
Lesley explains 'I took the image in the “krankenhaus”, the hospital, at the his-
torical abandoned mining village of Kolmanskop near Lüderitz in Namibia.
This village is a photographer’s paradise. One could spend days photograph-
ing in all the old houses being reclaimed by the desert. The empty old hospi-
tal with its long corridors was quite eery and in one’s imagination one could
feel the spirits of the people who came there for treatment. I was attracted to
the repetition of the doorways and the play of light and shadows repeating
themselves all the way down the corridor. I set up my tripod at the end of the
corridor and composed a shot trying to get the most rhythmic and balanced
composition. I closed down my aperture to F14, the focal length was 20 mm,
and I focused a third of the way into the frame to make sure everything was in
focus. In post processing I decided that a conversion to monochrome would
simplify the image and allow one to focus on the alternating visual rhythms.'
