Africa. The high cliffs to your right, across the Limpopo, are part of the Mapungubwe
reserve of South Africa.
The Northern Tuli Game Reserve is the collective name for several privately owned
game reserves, including the Mashatu, Ntani and Tuli reserves, covering all the land
north of the Limpopo River. Tuli forms a key part of the proposed Greater Mapun-
gubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty,
with majestic rocks, diverse vegetation, abundant wildlife, a profusion of birds and a
rich archaeological heritage, and spans more than 25 000ha of wilderness.
The Mashatu reserve and their lodges are unfortunately out of the price range of
mere mortals but it is well worth hocking the wife and kids, perhaps also the dogs,
for a chance to photograph wildlife in this reserve, especially the three big cats and
elephants as well. In fact, everything is there. You just need luck and an eye for the
moment.
Mashatu was one of the first reserves to have an enclosed water level photographic
hide and it was built from a buried shipping container with access, generally in the
dark hours of the morning or in the unproductive early afternoon, through a trap-
door in the roof. This first hide was originally constructed by C4 Photo Safaris and is
jealousy protected by Mashatu Lodges.
This image was taken in September, from this hide at ISO 160, shutter speed 1/2000s
at f2.8 and focal length of 35mm, using a Canon 5D mk III and an EF 16-35mm f2.8
lens.
