On the cover
Our front cover image Portrait of a Giraffe by Jessica Nitschke was one of the winning
images in our May competition. " I adored giraffes as a child, so when I first came to
South Africa, giraffes were the number one animal I wanted to see in the wild. More
than ten years and a thousand photographs later, I still love watching giraffes, but
find it challenging to photograph these remarkable creatures in new and interest-
ing ways, particularly from the back of a safari vehicle. This image was taken early
one morning on a game drive in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi park. Although the giraffes were
backlit and very dark, I noticed that oxpeckers were crawling around the head of
one in a visually interesting way. The giraffe was gazing directly towards us, for the
moment indifferent to the birds, and I managed two shots before he shook the ox-
peckers off.
"The image is actually a blend of both shots, as one had the better giraffe expres-
sion, but the other had a more pleasing arrangement of birds; so I combined the two
using masking. The light and color in the overcast morning was not great, so I went
for black and white. Although the sky and clouds were not at all blown out, I chose
nonetheless to white out the sky completely in order to evoke the idea of a studio
portrait. Technical info: Fujifilm X-t3, XF100-400 (@211mm), ISO250, 1/500s, f/5. Pro-
cessed using Capture One, blended in Photoshop," explains Jessica.
