MASTER The work of Yousuf Karsh
December 23, 1908 – July 13, 2002
PHOTO Yousuf Karsh, was a Canadian-Armenian photographer
known for his portraits of notable individuals of politics,
Hollywood, and the arts, from Albert Einstein and Sir Win-
GRAPHERS ston Churchill to Walt Disney and Grace Kelly. He has been
described as one of the greatest portrait photographers
of the 20th century. Yousuf Karsh is a classic portrait artist.
His work is classic, formal, dramatic and quite grand in style
while still revealing the human behind the image.
After fleeing Armenia (now Turkey), his father was able to
send him to Canada, where he served as an apprentice to
John H. Garo, a Boston painter and portrait photographer,
and briefly attended evening classes at art school. Garo introduced Karsh to artificial lighting
techniques, which formed the basis for Karsh’s use of dramatic lighting in his portraits. His
first breakthrough in photojournalism came in 1936 when he photographed the meeting
between U.S. Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King.
Look and think before opening His iconic 1941 photograph of Winston Churchill was another breakthrough point in his 60-
the shutter. The heart and mind
are the true lens of the camera.. year career. Over 20 photos by Karsh appeared on the cover of Life magazine, until he retired
- Yousuf Karsh in 1993.
