Ken explains "Local Photographers from Centurion MCP Club were fortunate to
receive special entrance invitations to the Dress Rehearsal of the Johannesburg
Ballet at the Joburg Theatre Complex in Braamfontein. The theatre had sever-
al photographer-visiting groups, including management and staff, and we had
strict instructions about areas of seating which were available for photographers.
                                             Other restrictions included:
                                                  • No Flash photography.
                                                  • No walking around or changing of seating during the performance.
                                                  • No noise or discussions during performance.
The total time for the shoot including an interval of 20mins was approx. 2 hrs.
I found the camera settings difficult. ISO setting had to be fairly high, with Ap-
ertures varying from f2.8 to f5.6 and shutter speeds to cope with the dancing
movements. I personally do not use pre-sets or auto, which made it that more
                                             difficult.
The Image was one of approx. 300. Generally, the 2 dancers were not in sync. i.e.,
looking in different directions, one of them not smiling or with closed eyes, etc.
If I tried again I would most definitely be shooting at high speed, and take the
consequence of having to sort through thousands of images.
                                             General settings: Nikon D500, with 28-70mm x 2.8 lens, Pre-set ISO, E/V +1, and
some images using ‘Touch Shutter’, 72-point dynamic area. I found the teachings
Dancer – By Ken van Wyk. FPSSA. (VERS) received from my tutor, Martin Barber, were essential for the subtle background
                                             adjustments".
