Our cover image, Choice and doorways by Marianna Meyer was one of our winning images in
the August competition. Marianna reports "Great was my delight that the Set Subject for Au-
gust was my favourite, Altered Reality. I had not entered the monthly competition for a while
and was spurred to look for suitable images to enter from my collection. To my surprise I discov-
ered images were “too old” to enter, with a further realisation that I had not been photograph-
ing much this year. Since moving to Plettenberg Bay I have been painting more and more and
had not noticed that the camera had been gathering dust. The target was to break the drought
by entering at least one image, a multiple exposure in-camera abstract. The location was my
sunny lounge on a cold winter’s day. Long stem arums with one of my abstract paintings as
backdrop, I started photographing. Not so easy I discovered. Instead of being an exercise in
creativity, my efforts went unrewarded and became pure frustration. I moved to put the cam-
era away, defeated. Don’t give up so easily, I thought, taking the camera out of the bag again.
How to remedy the sum of captures that resulted in an over exposed mess, over and above not
achieving even one pleasant composition. Improvising, no clear plan, just instinct and perse-
verance, the final result was achieved by increasing shutter speed exponentially when making
the last exposure in each collection. More pleasant compositions were made possible by limit-
ing the overall number of exposures. This in-camera creation consists of 5 exposures, each at
1/125 sec F3.6 ISO 160. The 6 th and last image at 1/1600 F4 ISO 160.
