Our front cover image Country Lane by Joyce Goldschmidt was one of the winning images
in our August Competition. “I took this photograph in July during a trip to the charming
hamlet of Rhodes in the Eastern Cape, where we were taken each day by our guide, Brendan
Cole, to the most beautiful locations in the vicinity. One of them was Baloch Farm where we
were greeted by magnificent views of shimmering lakes, tree-lined country lanes, beauti-
ful reflections in ponds and majestic mountains in the distance - each calling for photo-
graphs to be taken. This particular avenue of trees in autumn colours with soft light filtering
through the branches just caught my eye.
“I took this image with my iPhone 12 Pro, which I had recently bought. I was able to com-
pare notes with and get advice from other photographers on the trip who also used their
iPhones in anticipation of the forthcoming competition theme in August. On their advice, I
downloaded a number of photographic Apps, including Retouch, Slow Shutter, AvgCamPro
and Snapseed.
“For my editing process, I used Snapseed - adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation and
warmth and lastly adding a vignette and increased the inner and decreased the outer
brightness.
“I was greatly inspired by our E & D presenter in June, Adrian McGarry, who has been shoot-
ing with an iPhone since 2012 - producing images of superb quality. Like him, it is now also
my preferred camera because it is always with me, readily available and so easy to use,”
explains Joyce.
