Winning PRINT images from May
For the first time in over a year a print competition evening was held at St. Stephens Hall on
19th May, where full Covid precautions were applied. Members had been encouraged to enter
three prints in an Open category for judging by an outside judge, who was Francois du Bois
from Tygerberg Photographic Society. Some 38 prints were submitted, but only 16 Members
attended the evening.
“What a pleasure to judge a ‘live’ competition again,” was Francois' comment. “I was very im-
pressed with the high standard and quality of the prints which made it very challenging to pick
the winners. For me there are three important aspects of a good print - the subject, the quality
of the print and the presentation. It was a pleasure to see the effort made to do justice to them.”
Below are the winners in the various categories together with the judge’s comments.
Winner (Salon) Stretch by Vic Els (27). A well exposed, sharp image of a Kingfisher. The photographer managed to capture all the
beautiful colours of the bird without blowout or deep shadows and with a nice highlight in the eye. The well manages blurred
background make the bird stand out (also referred to as “make it pop”), without any interference from the background to distract
our attention. An added plus is the lovely action of the bird, placed on a third with ample space in front of it. Well done.
