On The Cover
Our cover image, They by Kim Stevens was one of our winning images in the Sep-
tember competition. Kim reports "“They” was inspired by a photograph created by
the Dutch photographer/ artist Jenny Boot, who utilises light to create Vermeer-type
photographs, mixing classical and modern elements to create portraits of powerful
women.
I decided to put my own spin on the “Pearl Earring” by photographing an androg-
ynous-looking boy adolescent, to draw attention to the crisis many young people
face today, who do not wish to conform to the social construct and prefer to be
recognised as gender neutral.
I used a black background in a makeshift studio with a large indirect light source
camera-left, a softer indirect light camera-right, a reflector in front and a snoot on
the background to create the moulded light on the face and the triangle of light on
the left cheek in the style of the Flemish artists.
Settings were Canon R 5 with 85mm prime, f 8 and ISO 100 , shutter speed 1/160.
