On The Cover
The cover image, Thimna with Gold, by
Joyce Goldschmidt, won a gold with 24
points in the set subject of our August
competition.
"Having enjoyed the Portrait workshop
presented recently by John Alexander,
I was inspired to try my hand at photo-
graphing a model," says Joyce.
"Thimna is a Jazzart dancer who wanted
a few photographs for her portfolio and
agreed to model for me. Being a dancer,
she knew how to move her body and how
to position herself in beautiful ways for
the camera.
"I needed a dark room, so the improvised
studio was set up in our garage with a
black backdrop. The key source of lighting
was a Profoto octabox to the left of the
camera and a small umbrella as a fill light
on the right. A snoot was placed above
and behind the model. Soft makeup was
applied by a make-up artist to control the
shiny areas on Thimna’s skin.
"Very little post-processing was neces-
sary, and I used a Nikon Z5 mirrorless cam-
era on a tripod. The image was captured
at 1/160 sec, f5 and ISO 100.
"Note to self: don’t do this in winter
again!" jokes Joyce. "Thimna nearly froze
to death, despite the two
heaters!"

of the Photographic Society
of South Africa in 1954
and has been affiliated to
PSSA ever since.
