On the cover

Our front cover image Agapanthus bloom by Nicol du Toit was one of the high-scoring
images at our April Competition. “The Covid lockdown severely limited my photogra-
phy opportunities. Eventually I felt I just had to do some photography and after spend-
ing a day in my own garden, I set up a makeshift studio in one of our spare bedrooms. It
was a good opportunity to learn more about using off camera flashes as studio lighting.
“These modern radio flashes, which can be controlled from the camera, are really ideal
for such a project. I also cut my own gells from scrap I found at a professional movie
supply company and played around with different colours. This image was one of a few
I thought had potential to do well in competitions and salons.
“It was taken with my Canon 5D Mark 3 with a Canon EF100mm f/2.8 Macro lens -
1/180 second at f/32. The two flashes were set up to provide side lighting at different
strengths,” explained Nicol.
