On the cover
Our front cover image Reaching for the sky by Pat Scott was one of the winning images in
our July Competition. “Probably most people know that my favourite genre in photography
is wildlife, and that my all-inclusive photographic interest is nature; and with nature comes
trees", explains Pat.
“As a young child I loved climbing trees, and in my working life I conducted a great deal of
research in Forestry, so when I became involved in photography it was only natural that I
would be attracted to trees - trees of all shapes, colours and sizes. However, due to my scien-
tific background and the need for highly accurate representations of the physical world, the
vast majority of my images tend to be very ‘realistic’. But fortunately for me I am a member
of Full Spectrum, a group of talented and experienced photographers who are amazingly
creative, and we are all encouraged by Martin Osner to be more artistic with our images.
“We were on a photo shoot with Martin in De Hel in Constantia, working with multiple im-
ages trying to bring the trees ‘alive’ with movement and light. I felt a little restricted at the
lower, darker levels of the forest, so shooting a bit randomly, trying different settings I made
my way up the higher level where the light was tremendous. Almost immediately I saw this
clump of trees and lifted my camera, the rest is history; believe it or not, but this image was
the first image I took ... as does happen occasionally!
“I took it with my Canon 5D Mark IV, using a utility lens 24 - 105mm to get a fairly wide angle
shot of the tress. I set the camera on Creative mode with four shots; shooting one sharp, one with slight movement, one marginally
out of focus and one of the bark of a tree to add texture. It is obvious that my camera was held above my head up to the sky. I did
very little to the image in post processing, except for temperature which I made warmer, and followed that up with a bit of satura-
tion on the orange.
