On the cover
Our front cover image Old Souls lurk here by Kim Stevens was one of the high-scoring im-
ages at our December Competition evening. “In August 2021, I attended a star workshop
run by Kyle Goetsch that was held at the Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve in the Cedarberg
– an ideal place to practise night photography as it is a dark sky reserve and has very little
light pollution.
“These abandoned crofters cottages made a great foreground to photograph against the
impressive Milky Way backdrop! We put some very low-light lanterns inside the cottages
to give depth and definition to the structures.
“It was rather creepy entering these structures in deep blackness of the night and one
could easily conjure up ghostly encounters!
“It was the first time that I put my relatively new mirrorless Canon R5 and RF15-35mm f 2.8
lens to the test for night photography. Seeing the detail that the camera could capture in
the stars was mind-blowing and easily compensated for the icy temperatures I endured.
“This is a four image vertorama, stacked in Photoshop to capture as much of the Milky
Way as possible including the core. Each image is 20 seconds at f2.8 and ISO 6400,” ex-
plains Kim.
