Cape Camera September/October 2021
Winning images from September
Set subject: Bird photography
The judges for the competition were Johan Brits and Francois Roux from the Vereeniging Pho-
tographic Society, who alternated commenting on images throughout both categories. The set
subject was clearly a theme that members felt comfortable with as half of the entry for the compe-
tition (63 images of a total of 125) was devoted to the set subject, reports LESLEY PAROLIS.
Promotions

Below are the winners in the various categories together with the judge’s comments.
Set Subject
Winner PDI - Set (Master) Gently Does It by David Barnes (26).
Good action and sharp focus on the spoonbill. A bit over-ex-
posed between the wings and behind the head. Winner PDI - Set (Advanced) Black-shouldered Kite by Dieter Bü-
tow (25). Strong composition. Good sharpness and detail in the
feathers. Manage to avoid digital noise in the blue background.
The branch at the bottom is over-exposed and distracting.
Winner PDI - Set (Salon) Ready to Dive by Vic Els (26). Good ac-
tion and correct shutter speed to freeze the action. A bit more Winner PDI - Set (Beginner) Buzzard Landing by Ashley Smith
detail around the eye will improve the image. (21). Good action shot. Background blurred and not compet-
ing with the subject. Focus on the bird is not optimal. The white
parts in the wings are too bright.
