(30). My first thought when I saw this was ‘what fun’ – I love im-
ages that bring a smile to my face, and this image has a beauti-
ful energy that has come from the movement added to the im-
age to create the abstract effect. The tones, lines, composition
and crop are excellent. The limited colour palette adds to bal-
ance and harmonious feeling of the image. The abstract nature
of the image has been delivered through a post-production
technique and it has turned an otherwise obvious subject into
one that the brain can run with its own imagination, thus meet-
ing the ‘abstract’ brief perfectly. Being extremely picky – if I was
to make one suggestion – in the top right corner there is a small
point/triangle, it is the only shape of that sort in the image and
it is right on the edge of the frame, so caught my eye – very eas-
ily cropped out.
Winner PDI – Set (Beginner) Upwardly mobile by Joyce Gold-
schmidt (29). This is a lovely abstract image. The tones and col-
ours are sympathetic to the subject and have really helped to
accentuate the lines and structures rather than the subject mat-
ter. The exposure of the image is good, as is the choice of depth
of field and filling of the frame with the subject matter to make
this a good abstract study. My eye loved moving all over the
image and following the lines. For a higher score I would have
liked to have seen the uprights more vertical in the image and
the vertical poles on each side of the image and the lines lead-

colour, depth and interest. The use of the bold colours has
worked really well, and the contrasts within the image are su-
per. An image with great exposure, interest, balance. Looking at
this image I felt I was dancing around it, moving with the reflec- “Be daring, be different, be impractical, be

on the image. One small recommendation is to check the edges play-it-safers, the creatures of the com-

they are points of strong contrast in the image and they are on – Cecil Beaton
