Cyanotype Photography - Chloe Obermeyer
Cyanotype is an alternative photographic process dating back to the mid-1800s. It
is a cameraless form of photographic printing that uses light-sensitive chemistry,
which is applied to a surface and exposed to UV light to create distinctive Prussian
blue prints. It has gained popularity among photographers who long for an artis-
tic and analogue means of image creation that is relatively easy to achieve and
can be done at home without highly specialized equipment. Cyanotype allows for
artistic exploration, incorporating not only photographic negatives but also a va-
riety of objects, such as plants and found materials, resulting in compositions that
showcase intricate details and textures found in the natural world.
Please join us for an in-person educational demo and presentation on Cyanotypes by Chloe Ober-
meyer on Wednesday 16 August 2023 at the SASNEV centre, Pinelands.
Chloe is a Cape Town-based visual artist and workshop instructor who graduated with a BA (Fine
Art) degree from Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2014 and completed her Masters in Fine Art
through UNISA in 2021. Much of Chloe’s artistic practice is driven by a fascination with the natu-
ral world, particularly the ocean.
She spends a lot of time exploring coastal environments, collecting organic debris to use in her
artwork. She has largely been motivated by exploring alternative printing and photographic tech-
niques, and how working with light sensitive chemistry can be used to grapple with her artistic
intent.
Chloe has exhibited her work in galleries in Cape Town, Italy and London.
