E&D Report back
19 July 2023 - Flash Photography
by Peter Haarhoff
To create interesting light, you have to create interesting shadows
Eighteen CTPS members were educated and entertained at our
E&D evening which was presented by Peter Haarhoff, master of
flash photography. Peter’s presentation covered the various as-
pects of flash photography – guide numbers, synchronization,
slow sync and high speed flash, Through The Lens metering vs
Manual, how to create softer light and how to bounce the flash
off surfaces and flash diffusers. His talk was illustrated by the
use of various flash lights, umbrellas, reflectors, soft boxes and
his trusty model, Takunda.
Takunda obligingly posed while Peter demonstrated the effects
of using different camera settings and lighting techniques.
Peter demonstrated the use of Multi or Stroboscopic Flash
where a rapid series of flashes is fired to capture images of a
moving subject in a single photograph.
He stressed these important points to remember:
• The bigger the light source in relation to your subject, the
softer the light.
• The aperture controls Flash exposure, the shutter speed
controls Ambient Exposure.
• The best way to learn is by making mistakes.
Peter is an excellent teacher. If anyone would like personal tui-
tion on flash, or any other aspects of photography, please con-
tact him directly at photocoach@mweb.co.za and visit his web-
