Cape Camera October 2024
E&D report back –16 October 2024: Bird photography by Johan Greyling
Before the start of the AGM in October, safari guide
and former AFO photographic club member, Johan
Greyling, gave a zoom talk on bird photography.
The focus of his presentation was on how manually
adjusted evaluative metering (EV) and exposure com-
pensation, combined with a high shutter speed, can
prevent white blow-out or loss of detail in dark areas.
While negative EV can result in a very dark image, he
demonstrated how this can be corrected by adjusting
exposure in post-processing. Noise resulting from a
high ISO can be rectified with noise reduction software.

data. He/she must also collect all the RAW files from the
authors, or all the original unmodified jpg files — in the
latter case he/she should also request the images taken
immediately before and after the submitted image.
These must be kept in case the organisers or FIAP Ethi-
cal Services wishes to inspect them. When required for
inspection, the RAW file must be sent within 10 days of
their request. If the file is not sent and received within
the deadline, the submitted image will be disqualified,
FIAP says.
CAPA and PSA also specify that RAW files could be re-
quested when AI is suspected.
PSSA Rules
Does the above sound familiar? Except, that up to now
PSSAs sanctions for manipulation and AI is much more
lenient and currently RAW files are only requested from
award winners in non-manipulation categories – or
when a salon director is concerned that AI features (like
a Photoshop sky) had been included.
The salon committee has final say whether an image
should be disqualified and photographers may appeal
to Francois Roux if they believe the DQ was not deserved.
