Winner PDI – Set (Advanced) Power and
beauty by Simon Mouton (13).
Wendy Freer commented: A most powerful im-
age where it feels as if the animal is about to jump
straight at the camera. It is pinsharp with the eyes
looking directly at the viewer. Because the grass in
the background is of a plain colour and a similar
texture, it does not distract from the unfolding ac-
tion. Well done.
Simon Mouton says: I have always considered ti-
gers to be the most beautiful animals in the world,
and I will always cherish the absolute privilege of
spending a few unforgettable days at Tiger Canyon
near Philippolis in the Free State during early De-
cember 2024.
This image was shot on an early morning game
drive at around 5:30. The tiger stalked and chased
the cruiser a few times and, after a few attempts, I
managed to capture this close-up image.
Canon EOS R6 II with 100-500 lens at 100 mm, ISO
8000, f16, 1/1000 sec (auto ISO).

Winner PDI – Set (Intermediate) Antares Hide
night visit by Melanie Black (14 COM).
Wendy Freer commented: A splendid and pin
sharp image that has great impact due to an ex-
cellent crop that concentrates on the eye and the
trunk. I would suggest to slightly reduce the high-
lights in the trunk and perhaps slightly darken the
legs in the background.
Melanie Black says: Antares Hide Night Visit was
taken in June this year at the Antares Bush camp,
Balule Nature reserve, just outside the Kruger
Park.
This is a unique spot for photographers to visit a
very special hide. The Ungede photography hide
is a great vantage point from which one can get
a close- up view of the water hole, where animals
periodically come down to drink. There is only
space for 4 photographers with adjustable swivel
chairs and sturdy camera supports. There is also
a bar fridge and a kettle and a couch to relax on
while waiting for the animals.
I spent many nights waiting quietly, hoping for a
leopard at close range. Elephants frequently came
to drink just metres from our lenses. Be prepared
for your sleep rhythm to be upset!.
Camera: Fuji xt5, Lens: 50-140mm fuji lens, ISO:
64000, f stop: 2,8, shutter speed 1/200.
