Winner PDI – Open (Beginner) Struisbaai
Treknetting by Karin Bütow (12 COM).
Wendy Freer commented: The high angle from
which this image was taken is most attractive,
and so is the arch the net is forming against the
water - creating a leading line. It has beautiful
colours of the sky, sun and the water. The cen-
tral position of the sun and the light also works
very well. If the person at the bottom right hand
corner would have been properly included, it
would have added to the image.
Karin Bütow explains: The image was taken
very early in the morning at Struisbaai Beach
with my Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max.
I used the telephoto Lens x3 at 77mm f2.8, ISO 32
and an Exposure 1/190 of a sec.
Winner Print– Open (Master 2) The fisherman
by Jacoba van Zyl (13).
Nicol du Toit commented: The photographer creat-
ed a very attractive, moody, photograph and handled
the lighting and colours very well. I particularly like
the lighting on the model's face, which immediately
draws the eyes to his face. The background has a nice
texture and was kept dark enough not to make the
image busy. The photographer created a very nice
story making use of the fishing line.
Jacoba van Zyl explains: The image was taken
during the PSSA Congress in Struisbaai at the com-
munity portrait shoots run by John and Lea-Anne
Alexander, Kim Stevens and Lesley Parolis. Constant
lighting was used, and I found that I had to push the
ISO very high to get a reasonably sharp image. The
fisherman talked without taking a breath, his hands
doing most of the talking. This was not good for the
lowish shutter speed due to low lighting conditions!.
He was quite a character.
Camera settings f3.2, ISO 6400, 1/250th sec. I made
slight changes to exposure, highlights, shadows,
contrast and denoised in Lightroom. In Photoshop
I did some dodging and burning, removed spots
from his jacket and slightly desaturated the red of
the ring holding the fishing line. After cropping I
added a light vignette.
