Jenny Powis found the outing a real chal-
lenge. “I had to force myself to find new and
interesting angles of the scene because
there are already so many excellent images
of the car museum out there. In the end, I
concentrated on textures because I loved
the myriad of patterns that are created by
the rust – even shattered glass windows at-
tracted my eye for abstract design."
Nicol du Toit had this to add: “About four or
five years ago I have been on a CTPS outing
to the car museum in Joostenberg Vlakte
and thought then already that it would be
good to go again. Due to the Covid lock-
down it was only my second outing in al-
most a year. I always enjoy outings as it is
one of the few occasions when one can
socialise with members because during
our competition and E&D evenings there
are only a few minutes before and after the
meeting and teatime to do so. Photographs by Jenny Powis
“I also find the way photographers see dif-
ferently very stimulating for my own crea-
tivity. This is very noticeable at outings,
both in the way people go about taking
photos as well as to see what they photo-
graphed. It never ceases to amaze me how
people come back with totally different
photographs from the same shoot. Which
reminds me, we should resurrect our out-
ing galleries again.
“I knew what to expect and could prepare
for the shoot. I decided to concentrate on
textures and patterns and also remembered
that there are many newer cars kept under
cover in quite a dark shed. So, a tripod and
flash with a trigger to allow off camera posi-
tioning were essential equipment.
“And the Auto museum did not disappoint!
There is a multitude of patterns, textures
and colours. The cars, if anything, were
more rusted than before. You can spend
hours photographing and come back with
hundreds of photographs which will keep you busy for days af- Photographs by

“I was a little disappointed that so few people turned up, but it
is perhaps because of our members’ age profile and the threat
of the virus which are to blame. It is also a pity that there are
no refreshment facilities where we could have a coffee together.
Because of the timing, late on a Saturday afternoon, there were
no other places nearby we could use.”
