Winning images from January
Set subject: Gates, Doors & Doorways
The competition was judged by Francois A. Venter from the National Photographic Club, Pre-
toria. January was the first month in which the new rule of set subject images being no older
than one year (365 days) came into effect. Only three images did not conform to the instruc-
tions. To facilitate the checking of the shooting date please do not delete the meta data from
your image files when submitting them. This decision was taken to encourage everyone to
create at least one image for the set subject each month. These themes are chosen to stimulate
creativity and to get you to think deeper about what you are shooting. It certainly should take
you out of your comfort zone, as this is the only way to grow as a photographer. All subjects
themes for the year can be found very close to home and there is no need for travel, comments

The CTPS entries into the PSSA monthly competition for January were Washing by Jean
Bradshaw (Senior Entry) and Tending Pigeons by Jessica Nitschke (Juniod Entry)
Below are the winners in the various categories together with the judge’s comments.
Set Subject
Joint Winner PDI – Set (Beginner) Rustenburg by Sally-Ann
Spooner (18). Excellent symmetry with such a simple image. I
like the idea that the doorway is implied with the hedge open-
ing. The composition draws one into the image.
Joint Winner PDI – Set (Salon) One door into another by
Pat Scott (26). This is a zoom burst effect that is excel-
lently done as it draws the viewer into and through the
image. This technique also enhances the composition.
