Winning images from December 2023

Set subject: Capture the Night

The judges for the competition were Phil Sturgess FPSSA and Carina de Klerk APSSA from Hermanus
Photographic Society. Before retiring in Hermanus in 2019, Phil was President of the Johannesburg
Photographic Society for five years. He now serves as Hermanus treasurer and Carina as President.

In 2021 Phil Sturgess was ranked 16th on the national PDI Impala Log – the best achievement of a
Western Cape club member in a number of years — and in 2022 he was in the 18th position. Carina
was among the Top 50 entrants on the Impala log that year. They both completed the first year-
long national JAP training course for judges.

Promotions: None.

Entries into the monthly PSSA Competition:

The Senior Entry for December was 'Piazza San Marco' by Jacoba van Zyl, and the Junior Entry
was 'Ghent in all its Glory' by Ruth Scholtz.

PSSA Senior entry and Winner PDI - Open (Master): Piazza San Marco by Jacoba van Zyl (29). An astonishing im-
age. The detail is just perfect as is the light. It has a wonderful painterly feel. The breathless day and perfect reflec-
tions add to the impact of the image. While the white line isn’t necessarily in keeping with the historic structure it
does provide a useful lead-in without being over-powering. It’s difficult to think how this image could be improved.
If I was lucky enough to have this image in my portfolio I would try and remove all the photographers even though
they are very small in the image. Congratulations!
