Winner Print – Set (Master): Nie wieder ist jetzt by Kim Stevens (28).
Judge Steffne Hughes commented: A very powerful image with a powerful message created by the huge
monoliths reaching into an overcast and sombre sky. The monochrome approach adds to the solemn feeling
of the scene – overall an image that is very thought provoking.
Kim Stevens comments: "This image was taken at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin where I was visiting my
daughter. I shot this for the set theme Moods and emotions. The mood was really solemn and chilling amongst
those dark grey monoliths. This is actually a HDR of three images shot to compensate for the high dynamic
tonal range…ie dark subject and cloudy brighter skies .
"I lay on the ground and photographed upwards, capturing these cold, silent stone structures against the
mournful sky. The negative space held a meaning for me… it could be seen as a religious symbol or an Iron
Cross, or even a Swastika. I felt that the composition demands interpretation. The title “Nie Weider ist jetz —
Never again is now — was projected onto the Brandenburg gate to mark the 85th remembrance of the 1936
atrocities where Nazis carried out the murderous destruction of Jewish property and homes. " I believed this
message is needed as much today given the current world's political stage!"
She used Lightroom and Photoshop for the editing and black and white conversion of the image shot with a
Canon R5 mk11 with a 24-70 mm lens at 1/400 sec F5.6 ISO 800.

Jacoba van Zyl comments: on Vasco da Gama bridge (see p29): "I did quite a bit of homework before we went
to Portugal and this bridge was on my list of places to visit. I wanted a black and white or low saturation image
and selected a day when the forecast was for overcast conditions with no sun," Jacoba continues.
She captured this scene in Lisbon in October 2024 on a Fujifilm X-T2 with a Fuji XF 26-55mm 2.8 R LM WR lens
(35mm equivalent 24-70mm). She used 22.7mm (35mm equivalent 34mm) focal length at Aperture f14 and
shutter speed 1/100 sec.
"I would normally go for a longer shutter speed, but I only bought a polariser and a 10-stop filter after my
equipment was stolen," she explains. "The exposure time with the 10-stop was too long, so I only had the polar-
izer to slow the shutter speed down.
"I needed to do a lot of work in Lightroom and Photoshop to clean up the image as the foreground was quite
muddy and also desaturated the image."
