Kyle Goetsch commented: An emotive and attention-grabbing image that is everything an abstract
and long exposure image should be - in contrast, colour and balance.
Rudi Pothas explains: The image was taken on the recent CTPS weekend outing to Pringle Bay. I was
watching the waves roll in. The lighting was soft. Wanting to capture that smooth, flowing motion, I used
a slow shutter speed to blur the movement, giving the water a softer, more fluid look.
The ocean is never still, it is always shifting, always speaking in its own language of movement and light.
That’s the beauty of long exposure photography. It doesn’t just capture what the eye sees, it captures
what the heart feels.
In post-processing I adjusted the colours to bring out the purples and blues, making the scene feel calmer
and more atmospheric. The goal was to highlight the movement and mood, rather than just the details.
Canon 6d Mk II. Focal length 320mm, f/13, 0.2s, (coincidentally also) ISO 320.
In the PSSA May Senior Club Competition the image was awarded a score of 37 out of 45, which was the
highest of all Western Cape clubs. The judges were Antoinette Morkel of Port Elizabeth Camera Club, Johan
Brits of Vanderbijlpark Fotografiese Vereniging and Cathy Dooley of Southern Suburbs Camera Club.
