May-June 2025 Cape Camera Cape Camera May-June 2025

Winner Print – Set (Master) Camelthorns by Kim Stevens (29).
Kyle Goetsch commented: An excellent IR image that has great visual impact. Both the balance and contrast are
perfect. The only aspect which prevents it from getting a perfect score is to have a bit more breathing space at the
bottom and to take out the small bush on the left-hand side.
Kim Stevens commented: The scene was photographed in the Kgalagadi with an infrared converted Canon R cam-
era with a 16mm lens and a 580nm IR filter which fits between the lens and the camera. During a game drive, I
noticed this wonderful composition of the two trees leaning towards each other, and the skies complimented them
perfectly. I knew the scene would look great in Infrared. I love the glow produced by the chlorophyll laden leaves.
The image is almost monochrome and not much processing was required.

Winner Print – Set (Advanced) San Giorgio Maggiore by Joyce Goldschmidt (25).
Kyle Goetsch commented: This is a typical example of how much better images can look in print than in the digital
format or on a screen. I suggest pulling out more detail in the sky, as this would benefit the colours and textures of
          the buildings.
Joyce Goldschmidt explains: San Giorgio Maggiore is a 16th-century Benedictine Basilica on one of the many islands
of Venice. Built in the classical Renaissance style between 1566 and 1610, it has been the subject of many paintings, for
example in a series by Monet. Its brilliant white marble gleams above the water of the lagoon and forms the focal point
of view from many parts of the Grand Canal. This image was shot on a winter's morning while on a photographic trip
          with Kim Stevens in February 2025. Nikon Z5; ISO 100; f18; 24 - 120 lens; and a 30-second exposure.
